An earthquake of 4.1 magnitude has been reported in Tennessee and was felt in Atlanta, Georgia, and western North Carolina. That is according to the U.S. Geological Survey and local news reports. The website for USGS said the earthquake originated shortly after 9 a.m. EDT Saturday about 12 miles from Greenback, Tennessee. Earthquakes are not uncommon in the region. The USGS says there is a 5% chance of a magnitude 4 or larger aftershock in the next week. Damage does not usually occur from earthquakes until they reach a magnitude of somewhere above 4 or 5, although it depends on variables such as building construction, soil and distance from the epicenter.

India has accused Pakistan of repeatedly violating the ceasefire agreed earlier on Saturday in the disputed territory of Kashmir. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said late on Saturday that “there had been repeated violations of the understanding arrived between the two countries.” India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire deal following US mediation after they fired volleys of missiles across their borders on Saturday. It was the most serious increase in hostilities so far in a conflict triggered by a gun massacre last month, for which India blames Pakistan.

A group of Quakers are marching more than 300 miles from New York City to Washington, D.C. to demonstrate against the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigrants. The march extends a long tradition of Quaker activism to end wars and slavery and support women’s voting rights in line with the faith’s core belief. It's called the “Inner Light” – a direct link to God guiding them to fight for justice and peace. Five Quaker congregations filed a lawsuit earlier this year challenging a Trump administration move giving immigration agents more leeway to make arrests at houses of worship.

The new pope, Leo XIV, has something in common with many of his peers in the Catholic hierarchy. He’s been in positions of authority when accusations of sexual abuse have arisen against priests under his supervision. Now some advocates of victims say there needs to be an accounting for how Leo — the name taken by Cardinal Robert Prevost upon his election Thursday — handled such cases when he held positions of church authority in Chicago and Peru. And they hope that as pope, he will crack down on other bishops who they say are mishandling similar cases.

A Soviet-era spacecraft has plunged to Earth, more than a half-century after its failed launch to Venus. The half-ton spacecraft fell out of orbit on Saturday. The European Union Space Surveillance and Tracking confirmed its uncontrolled entry, as did the Russian Space Agency. The Russians said it came in over the Indian Ocean, but some experts questioned the location. It was not immediately known how much, if any, of the Kosmos 482 spacecraft survived the fiery descent through the atmosphere. Experts said ahead of time that some if not all of it might come crashing down, given it was built to withstand a landing on Venus. The chances of anyone being clobbered by the spacecraft debris were exceedingly low.
